Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child

Supported Charities and Organizations

On February 10, 2010 proceeds totaling over $37,000 from the 2009 Annual Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child were distributed to various local child-related charities.  Funds recipients were the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center, HALOS (Helping and Lending Outreach Support), Darkness to Light, Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Windwood Farm Home for Children, Parents Anonymous, as well as the Exchange Clubs of Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms, the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department and the City of Isle of Palms Recreation Department.

Each recipient pledges to use the funds given to them from the annual run/walk to support the mission of preventing child abuse here in the Lowcountry.  Examples of how the various recipients will use the funds follow:

·           Darkness to Light will use their received funds to help provide free child sexual abuse training and materials to teachers, law enforcement personnel, youth-serving organization staff and parents throughout the Lowcountry.

·           Lowcountry Orphan Relief will put the donation toward a fund to purchase apparel and basic necessities to aid needy children.

·           Windwood Farm Home for Children will put the received funds toward their Family Reunification Program to develop and maintain better child-parent relationships, improve attachment, deal with relationship problems and enhance overall family functioning. Windwood Farm provides therapeutic residential placement and education services to young boys ages five through sixteen who have been removed from their homes because of physical, psychological, or sexual abuse; exposure to domestic violence; substance abuse or criminal activity in their family; or other unstable home situations.

·           The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center pledges to put the funds toward their mission of keeping children safe from abuse, and when abuse occurs, working with the community to bring healing to these children and their families through a variety of services.

·           Parents Anonymous will put their received donation toward funding their new comprehensive Family-Based Program for parents, caregivers and children in the Charleston Tri-County area, in an effort to produce positive outcomes for families in preventing child abuse and neglect.

·          HALOS will use the donation toward coordination of the organization's programs that provide resources and special opportunities for child victims of abuse and neglect.
